In the first three weeks of 2019, Australians have lost more than $15 million dollars to cold-calling scammers.
These professional conmen are well spoken, smart, and specifically target older Australian men. They gain their victim’s confidence by offering them a deal on shares in legitimate companies – the only problem is the shares don’t exist. Victims are told their money will be deposited in Australian bank accounts and won’t leave our shores.
It is a confidence trick that has duped thousands of Aussies out of their hard-earned money, and one that 60 Minutes reporter Liam Bartlett was determined to take down.
